Making IT to the top: recruiters speak

What is the profile of the ideal IT director? Three industry recruiters speak about the job 'spec'

At this level, you will have total responsibility over the IT department, including budgets, delivery, human resources, and software and hardware procurement. This means that a candidate will need at least ten years of a proven track record in high-level IT management, possibly at the level of project manager. Training is essential, especially for the larger companies or government agencies, but you'll have to work your way up through the ranks. There is a certain amount of scope for outside contractors to move into this level as interim managers and build experience that way.

Candidates for IT director positions don't necessarily need university or recognised qualifications, but without them they need extensive industry knowledge. Many CVs we consider come from project manager or business analyst roles, which develop personal skills. Without these, a candidate will find it hard to rise above a system architect position. Hands-on ability is preferred by smaller employers, but shunned by large corporations, because it has little to do with the role in companies of such size. There's really no fixed pattern.

The real issue here is the size of the recruiting company. How specialised is the role? IT director requirements vary widely between small and large companies. It's a very broad title in these terms. We usually look to previous salaries to match this up - £30,000 doesn't indicate a big hitter in the corporate world - otherwise, we'd look for budget control, structured analysis experience and matrix management knowledge.
